COLOMBO : Zahira College Colombo positioned itself as a trendsetter among schools by orchestrating the Centenary Rugby Sevens, which took place on 3rd March, Sunday at Racecourse Grounds, Colombo.
The tournament was organized in conjunction with the centennial celebration of rugby at Zahira. It featured the participation of 16 teams, including the eight teams competing in the Division ‘A’ segment of the Inter-Schools Rugby tournament
To cap it all, Zahira College extended an invitation to Mr. Qais Al Dhalai, the President of Asia Rugby Federation, to grace the occasion as the Guest of Honour. Additionally, distinguished foreign referees were also in participation to officiate the games, elevating the international standard of the event.
A further string of exciting events were scheduled ahead of the celebrations to commemorate the Zahira Centenary Rugby 7. These included a special tie-up with Leicester Tigers, a visit from Australian rugby legend David Campese, a grand Centenary Dinner at the Galle Face Hotel, the issuance of a commemorative stamp and a first-day cover, the unveiling of a theme song, and the release of the ‘Centenary Souvenir’ (1924-2024).
In the culminating moments of the tournament, St. Peter’s College emerged triumphant as the ‘Champion,’ securing a noteworthy cash award of One Million Rupees. Isipathana College claimed the title of runners-up, winning Rs. 500,000. In addition, the champions of the Plate, Bowl, and Shield categories was each honoured a prize of Rs. 50,000.
Beyond this tournament, the organizers orchestrated a Women’s Sevens Tournament featuring three formidable teams: Air Force SC, Navy SC, and Army SC. The Women’s championship was claimed by Army, who were bestowed with a sum of Rs. 50,000.
The Race Course Grounds brimmed to capacity, resonated with the cheers of attendees fervently supporting their respective teams. It was an undeniably memorable event and is destined to linger in the minds of all participants and spectators for many moons to come.
The committee behind Zahira Centenary Rugby 7 devoted a meticulous three-month period to intricately plan every aspect of this epoch-making event, leaving no detail overlooked. Their resolute efforts and unwavering perseverance were instrumental in yielding such significant results, and played a crucial role in the resounding success of this occasion.
