World Wetlands Day observed in Sri Lanka: Its Time for Restoration

COLOMBO : The Ministry of Environment in cooperation with the  Ministry of wildlife and Forest Resources jointly observed the “World wetlands day at the Ministry of Environment Auditorium on Thursday, Feb 2.

Minister of Environment Naseer Ahamed and Minister of Wildlife & Forest Pavithra Wanniartchi attended the event which was aimed at creating an awareness on the significance of the Wetlands Day.

Speaking at the ceremony Minister Ahamed said : “ The theme of World Wetlands Day 2023 is “It’s Time for Wetlands Restoration,”.  It highlights the urgent need to prioritize wetland restoration.”

He pointed out that the Wetlands play a critical role in supporting a wide range of biodiversity and maintaining many natural cycles. It plays an important role in water purification and flood control, provides a habitat for the diverse plant as well as animal species, and supports local livelihoods.

“ The day educates people and creates awareness among the public about the restoration of vital ecosystems like wetlands on a global level,” the minister added.

” Sri Lankan is committed to follow the Ramzar Convention. Our country has 6 sites designated as wetlands”

There are 2,400 designated Ramsar sites around the world with combined surface area of over 2.5 Million square Kilometers.

Minister Pavithra Wanniartchi said educating the new generation about the value of rich heritage and the nature of the country.

School children were presented awards for submitting outstanding photographs depicting nature and its beauty.
