We are certain the parents of the Sri Lankan students in China are desperate as any other parents in the world to see their children out of the current disastrous situation there. Who can dispute their anxiety over their children whom they treasure more than anything in the world? Lawmaker Kariyawasam has faulted the government for its decision to bring them and other Sri Lankans home from China. On the contrary we applaud the government for responding positively to this S.O.S message from our countrymen trapped in an extremely frightening situation. While the U.S and neighboring India and many other countries are doing the same what is wrong we bringing our own people home? Over the past few days, as per patients in China, medical staff and experts who have told of delays in testing for the virus, in telling the public the true nature of the virus’ spread and of an already overburdened health system creaking under enormous weight of a rapidly expanding outbreak. Now WHO also has declared Coronavirus a global health emergency.
If lawmaker Kariyawasam thinks that we are not sufficiently equipped or our doctors are not competent enough to treat a patient suffering from Coronavirus, how the 43-year-old Chinese tourist infected with the same disease is recovering well and can be discharged from the Infectious Diseases Hospital – I.D.H, in the next few days. The famous English-American author, Christopher Hitchens said ‘I don’t envy or much respect people who are completely politicised’. Our humble request to all our politicians is: ‘Please don’t politicise every issue!’.
