ADELAIDE: As both Ireland and Afghanistan lost their respective matches to New Zealand and Australia on Friday,ov.4, any possibility of Sri Lanka being in the top 2 in the Group 1 points table has been eliminated. It was a world cup journey with many highs and lows and injury being the biggest challenge for the Sri Lankan team. Today, Sri Lanka has been eliminated at the Super 12 stage.
Sri Lanka’s campaign almost ended before the Super 12 phase after a shocking loss to Namibia in the tournament opener,but fought back to beat UAE and the Netherlands to qualify for the Super 12s.
The Sri Lankan journey in Australia has been unfortunately hindered by a spate of injuries, making several replacements during the tournament. Sri Lanka secured wins against Ireland and Afghanistan but lost to the Kiwis and the hosts Australia. Sri Lanka will play England tomorrow and a win would mean Sri Lanka will end the Super 12’s with 6 points.
Sri Lanka’s key player Bhanuka Rajapaksa at a press interview mentioned “Regardless of the result of (Friday’s) games, it’s a matter of playing good cricket in Australia. We have already shown what we are capable of a couple of months back, and it’s a strong side,”. He further added “Unfortunately not all the results have come our way, but tomorrow’s game is quite important to end on a high note. We just want to play good cricket and justify our presence in Australia.”
