Rain forces washout to India-Pakistan clash

CHRIS DHAMBARAGE

COLOMBO – Bad weather played spoilsport as the much-anticipated Asia Cup Cricket Tournament Group ‘A’ clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan ended in a no-result at the Pallekele Stadium in Kandy on Saturday.

India posted a highly competitive 266 runs in 48.5 overs after they had won the toss and elected to bat first on the back of two fighting half centuries from wicket-keeper batsman Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya.

Pakistan were set to begin their run chase at 8.15 p.m. local time, but a slight drizzle prevented the players from coming out as the weather continued to play hide-and-seek throughout the day.

After a couple of inspections, the on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Ruchira Palliyaguruge along with the Match Referee Javagal Srinath eventually called off the game shortly before 10.00 p.m. local time.

The two teams shared points with Pakistan qualifying for the Super Four Segment following their massive 238-run victory over Nepal in Multan while India will face Nepal in their next game on Monday at the same venue.

Chief scores:
India: 266 in 48.5 overs (Rohit Sharma 11, Shubman Gill 10, Shreyas Iyer 14, Ishan Kishan 82, Hardick Pandya 87, Ravindra Jadeja 14, Jasprit Bumrah 16, Shaheen Afridi 4/35, Naseem Shah 3/36, Haris Rauf 3/58) vs Pakistan.
