COLOMBO: One person was reported dead and another eight persons have been affected due to the prevailing rainy weather caused by the low-level atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of the country.
The death was reported due to lightning from the Muttur Divisional Secretariat Division on Wednesday and five people of the victim’s family have been affected.
Another three people belonging to one family in the Beliatta Divisional Secretariat Division in the Hambantota District have been affected due to the heavy winds that occurred on Wednesday and their house have been partially damaged.
The Department of Meteorology issuing yesterday’s (14) weather forecast said cloudy skies are expected over most parts of the country as the low-level atmospheric disturbance still persists in the vicinity of the country.
Heavy showers above 100 mm can be expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and North-Western provinces and showers and thundershowers can be expected at some places in these areas.
Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm can be expected at some places across the country and showers will occur at some other places in the afternoon or night, the department said.
In addition, heavy showers may occur at several places in the deep and shallow sea areas extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota, the department said.
Winds will be south-westerly and wind speed will be 25-35 Kmph and a sudden increase of wind speed up to 60-70 Kmph is expected in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota due to active cloudiness in the sea area to the south-west and south-east of Sri Lanka, the department said.
The sea areas will be fairly rough at times and there is a possibility for sudden roughness due to the sudden increase of wind speed.
The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thunder showers and the naval and fishing communities are informed to be vigilant, the department further said.CDN
