COLOMBO ; The Colombo-based National Unity Alliance (NUA) has vehemently condemned the blatant assault on democracy unfolding in the
aftermath of the February 8 election in Pakistan.
In a press release issued on Monday , Feb 12, the NUA says “ The international community must not turn a blind eye to these egregious violations, and the NUA calls for decisive action to ensure the preservation of democratic values and the rule of law.
The NUA expresses grave concern over the reported attempts to manipulate election results, casting a shadow over the democratic process. We demand an immediate, impartial, and internationally monitored investigation into these allegations to expose any wrongdoing and hold the perpetrators accountable.
At the heart of this crisis is the fundamental principle of respecting the people’s mandate.
The citizens of Pakistan have exercised their democratic right, have spoken through the ballot, and their will must be honored
and respected. The reported attempts to ‘steal the votes’ through delays and manipulation, coupled with accusations against prominent figures, demand an urgent and thorough investigation. The NUA firmly insists that political parties prioritise the nation’s interest over personal agendas, engage in transparent negotiations, and uphold the principles of democracy in forming a government that mirrors the will of the people.
In the face of potential political machinations, the NUA urges all stakeholders to consider the long-term
consequences of their actions. Any deviation from the democratic path not only jeopardises the stability of Pakistan but sends shockwaves across the international community.
We call upon the international community, particularly democratic nations and institutions, to closely monitor
the unfolding situation in Pakistan. The erosion of democracy in any part of the world is a matter of global
concern.
The NUA seeks solidarity from democratic nations in condemning any violation of democratic principles and in ensuring that the people’s mandate is upheld.
The NUA categorically rejects any military intervention in the political affairs of Pakistan. Such actions not only
violate the constitutional order but also threaten the very foundation of democratic governance.
The armed forces must respect their constitutional role and refrain from undermining the democratic fabric of Pakistan.”
