COLOMBO : Due to a disagreement with the party leadership, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Deputy Chairman M. Naeemullah relieved himself of all party posts. Similarly, A.L.Tawam resigned from the post of youth affairs coordinator of the party.
Prior to the Delegates Conference, Mandatory High Command Meeting of the SLMC was held at the party Head Quarters “Dharussalam”, in Colombo on Sunday(6) .Most of the High Command members attended the meeting.
On the eve of SLMC’s 30th General Conference on Saturday,November 6, Naeemullah announced his decision as one of the vice presidents of the party during the mandatory political high-level meeting to elect the executive officers for the current year held at the party’s headquarters, Dharussalam.
Following party leader Rauff Hakeem’s announcement that two out of the three members of parliament who have been suspended due to disciplinary proceedings have been reinstated into the party by using the powers vested in him, Naeemullah expressed his strong objection against the decision of the leader as it undermines the interests of the party and the credibility of the leader in the society. He also moved a motion. The party’s youth affairs coordinator A.L. Tawam Penance approved. After more than two hours of heated arguments for and against the motion, the Speaker announced his decision to reinstate the two MPs.
M Naeemullah and A.L Tavam refused to take up the positions during the election of the administrative officers that followed.
Naeemullah is former member of the Central Provincial Council, and has been a senior member of the Muslim Congress for about thirty-four years from its inception and a member of the High Command for twenty-five consecutive years.
Suspension of three three MPs and proposed reinstatement two of them using SC leader Rauf Hakeem’s vested powers was the bone of contention which generated a two- hour long debate.
The suspended MPs include, M.S. Thowfeek, Faisal Cassim and H M M Harees, who was not present at the Sunday’s meeting.
