COLOMBO : Minister and Leader of Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) Arumugam Thondaman,55, passed way on Tuesday night, according to reliable sources.
It was reported that he was rushed to the Talangama hospital in Battaramulla after a fall where he had succumbed to injuries.
Earlier in the day, he was pictured with the new Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay when he met to discuss bilateral cooperation for community development including the ongoing Indian Housing Project in the plantation sector and the landmark Jaffna Cultural Centre.
Arumugan Thondaman is the Minister of Community Empowerment and Estate Infrastructure Development.
During a meeting between High Commissioner Gopal Baglay and Minister Arumugan Thondaman , they discussed bilateral cooperation for community development including the ongoing Indian Housing Project in the plantation sector and the landmark Jaffna Cultural Centre. India is undertaking construction of 10,000 houses for estate workers, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Sri Lanka in 2017. High Commissioner said that India will continue to undertake high impact, community-development projects for the people of Sri Lanka, in partnership with Government of Sri Lanka.
He was the grandson of the late Saumiamoorthi Thondaman, who was the founder of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress.
Funeral arrangements will be notified in due course, according to sources.
