As we mark International Women’s Day on March 8th, we are celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women around the world. International Women’s Day 2023 with theme of #EmbraceEquity, is defined as the “provision of fairness and justice in the distribution of benefits and responsibilities among all genders”.
Gender equity has helped shape and change the roles and expectations of all genders at work, at home, and in society, where all people are accepted for their talents, skills, and abilities, regardless of gender.
Many countries have made significant progress on gender equity including Indonesia and Sri Lanka, though need more to be done. Indonesia has made significant progress in promoting gender equity through its national laws and regulations to acknowledge the importance of protecting rights, freedom and welfare of its citizens, men and women. Given the opportunity, women can make a critical contribution to society.
Connecting amongst women between nations is very important to motivate and inspire each other. Therefore, during the berthing of the Indonesia Navy Ship KRI RE Marthadinata 331 in Colombo last month that brought 14 female troops including one co-pilot out of 138 crew, my Embassy in collaboration with the said Indonesian Women’s Navy had invited and had discussion on board with fellow Sri Lankan Women’s Navy. This has promoted close relations and cooperation in advancing the role of female soldiers in the world. More collaboration could be done in many sectors that mutually beneficial for both countries.
As we celebrate International Women’s Day today, let us therefore recommit ourselves to do all we can to embrace gender equity, and rest assured to work together.
Happy International Women’s Day!
