Mayor’s Cup semi-finals on Jan.7,8 and finals on Jan.15 in Gampola

Mayo

GAMPOLA: The Traveller Global (Pvt) Ltd in association with the Gampola local government body has organized the MAYORS CUP.

The Mayors Cup Tournament commenced on December 4 with 15 clubs battling it out for the prize money and bragging rights.

Currently, the best 4 teams have qualified for the semifinals, with Crystal Palace FC vs. Manchester SC to be held on the January 7 and Valiant SC vs. Red Sun FC to be held on the January 8.

The prize money is set at Rs.250,000 for the winner and Rs.150,000 for the runner-up and many more awards are being organized including best player and best goal-keeper.

The local government authority together with the Gampola Football League and the Sri Lankan Football federation have supported grassroots-level football development and initiation.

Just as Moore’s law impacts technology and everyday lives, the game of football evolves and changes with time. Every aspect of Football needs to be assessed and developed. The player improvement and local area involvement has been very positive with the Traveller Football Academy and its role at grass roots level football development.

The reason for these tournaments and generous prize money is to encourage the primary instincts to compete and win. Furthermore, the junior players look forward to these social events and become productive individuals. Such high aspirations can only be achieved with team work. The standard of football needs to be elevated in Sri Lanka to become  more competitive and compete at the international stage.
