Lankans in US stage protests against forced cremation of Covid infected dead bodies

WASHINGTON: Sri Lankans United (SLU) joined by the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), Islamic Council of North America – ICNA (CSJ), All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS), Sri Lankan American Voice for Equity (SAVE), Washington Area Jews for Jewish- Muslim Understanding and other civic and religious dignitaries, staged a protest against Sri Lanka’s forced cremation of Covid infected dead bodies in Washington on Saturday, Jan.2

Gaddafi Ismail – President of the Sri Lankans United (SLU) and Mizli Rifki are the chief organizers of the event, where hundreds of Sri Lankans from all faiths gathered to demonstrate their protest by a motorcade.

In a press release issued for the event, Ismail said : “ Along with Sri Lankans across the globe, we are aghast at this horrific treatment of minorities in our motherland. As such, we have reached out to several senators and other officials in the DMV region to pressure the Sri Lankan government to end this atrocity. To this end, we the SLU have organized a protest in Washington DC with a car rally on 01/02/2021, departing from the National Cathedral on Wisconsin Avenue at 11.30 am, past the Sri Lankan Ambassador’s residence, and the Islamic Center of Washington DC, and terminating at 17th Street, followed by picketing at The Ellipse at President’s Park, across from the White House at 12.00 pm, and a press conference at the U.S. Capitol Grounds at 12.30 pm.”
