COLOMBO : The Government plans to introduce a long-term visa category with the aim of promoting Sri Lanka as a destination favourable for digital tourists.
Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga is expected to submit the relevant Cabinet Paper shortly to facilitate the creation of a new visa category to provide tax concessions. The ministry is of the view that the country would stand to benefit financially if digital tourists (i.e. those who work remotely from anywhere in the world) are permitted to remain in the country for extended time periods.
According to Minister Ranatunga, several other countries promote digital tourism including Portugal, Cambodia and Indonesia.
He noted that the Department of Immigration and Emigration could issue the long term visas based on the recommendations of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.
