Kurunegala Mayor stripped from his post

KURNEGALA: The Mayor of Kurunegala, Thushara Sanjeewa Vitharana, has been removed from his post by way of a special Gazette notification, due to his failure to pass the budget of the Municipal Council.

The relevant Gazette has been issued by the Governor of the North Western Province, Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda, by virtue of powers vested in him under Section 326 (1) of Municipal Council Ordinance Chapter 252 to be read with Section 2 of Provincial Council (Incidental Provisions) Act, No. 12 of 1989.

He orders that Thushara Sanjeewa Vitharana, the Mayor of the Municipal Council Kurunegala shall be deemed to have resigned from his office with effect from 31.12.2022, and, with effect from that date, the post of Mayor of the Kurunegala Municipal Council shall be considered as vacant. 

It has been issued since the budget document for the year 2023 has not been passed at the Council which was presented by the Mayor of the Municipal Council Kurunegala belonging to the North Western Province in terms of Section 215(a) of the Municipal Council Ordinance Act 252, as amended by Section 7 of the Local Authorities(Special Provisions) Act, No. 21 of 2012.

The Governor also orders that order that the powers, activities, execution of performance of the position of the Mayor shall be entrusted to the Deputy Mayor since the post of Mayor of Kurunegala Municipal Council is vacant.
