On the 1st of December 2023, the Government of the Republic of Korea donated taekwondo equipment to the Ministry of Sports. The donation was aimed at creating an amicable environment for taekwondo in Sri Lanka. The project was funded by the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation and the World Taekwondo Peace Corps Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Korea.
The equipment provided by the Korean government included taekwondo uniforms, taekwondo shoes, mattresses and other equipment useful for training. The Korean government believes the equipment provided will enhance training and effectiveness of the taekwondo unit in Sri Lanka.
The hand-over ceremony was graced by the presence of the Ambassador H.E. Miyon Lee from the Korean Embassy in Sri Lanka and representing the Ministry K. Mahesan, the Secretary, Dr. Shemal Fernando, the Director-General of Sports, Mr. Chaminda Punchihewa, President of the Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation and Kanchana Jayarathna, Vice President of the National Olympic Committee attended the ceremony.
The Ambassador extended her wishes for the success of upcoming inaugural International Taekwondo Open Pumsae Championship and the Asian Championship that will be held in Sri Lanka.
The Secretary to the Ministry of Sports extended his heartfelt gratitude to the Korean government and the people of the Republic of Korea for this invaluable contribution to the taekwondo unit. This donation will represent a significant step in cooperation and support from the Republic of Korea to Sri Lanka.
