COLOMBO : A group of Islamic religious scholars held discussions with the Minister of Justice, Ali Sabry recently on the proposed revision of the Muslim,Marriage and Divorce Act(MMDA)
As members of the Law Reforms Committee, they were given complete liberty to expressing their opinion on matters related to the Muslim Personal Laws.
The delegates dwelt on matters pertaining to the MMDA except the subjects which the Cabinet had already made decisions.
With regard to the matters on which the Cabinet has already decided, as members of the Committee and Religious Scholars some of the members submitted their opinion individually to the minister reiterating that the decisions taken should be in accordance with the fundamental teachings of Islam.
They appreciated the minister’s endeavours to maintain consistency of the religious teachings of Islam and adopt necessary progressive reforms, while preserving the rights of the Muslim community.
As members of the Law Reforms Committee, we had the complete liberty of expressing our opinions on matters related to the Muslim Personal Laws.
