COLOMBO: Former Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said here that the International Cricket Council ,ICC, had sent him a letter informing him of their interest in discussing his statement on match fixing of the World Cup 2011.
The former sports minister said that he would discuss with the ICC and hand over material to support his claims that Sri Lanka allegedly lost the 2011 Cricket World Cup Final to India in a match-fixing scandal.
He also made a statement to the Police Special Investigation Unit on Sports yesterday, regarding his comments made during the TV programme, in which he categorically stated that the match has been “sold” to India.
Mahindananda Aluthgamage was the Minister of Sports during the 2011 World Cup played in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
However, he did not disclose the names of those who might have been involved in the scandal, but said, “the players were not involved in this fixture, but other sections.”
He said,” I plan to fully cooperate with the ICC and would hand over the material and other evidence related to match –fixing to them, and the names too.”
Meanwhile, the ICC has commended Sri Lanka’s efforts to introduce tougher laws against match-fixing threats.
According to the ICC, India is involved in most of the match-fixing cases in cricket. Kumar Sangakkara, then captain of Sri Lanka, had reportedly told the media that former Sports Minister Aluthgamage’s claim warrants an investigation by the ICC.
