Grandma, 94, sits for degree test

KANDY: A ninety four-year-old grandmother has sat for the Thripitaka Dharma and Pali Language Assessment Test conducted by the Sri Sumangala Commemoration Council of the Vidyodaya University at the D.S. Senanayake College in Kandy on February 6 and 7.

Vithanage Leelawathi Aslin Dharmaratne of Nawalapitiya was born on February 15, 1928. She is a mother of four including Western Province Health Services Director Dhammika Jayalath.

All her daughters are graduates and it has been her expectation to be a graduate before her death, she said.

Getting through the examination for which Leelawathi sat during the weekend would make her qualified to sit for the Master of Arts Degree from the Kelaniya University.“It is my intention to pass that examination too,”she added.

This courageous woman stated that the women should not be hesitant to come forward and have to face life with strength. Chief Invigilator Lasith Mavilmada said this is the first instance where he met such an elderly candidate in his exam center.

A separate place was arranged for her to sit for the exam considering her physical difficulties to reach the exam hall that had been arranged in the upper floor, he said.(CDN)
