Full-scale inquiry by IGP: Three cops interdicted over the assault on the autistic boy in Aluthgama

COLOMBO: Three policemen including a Sub-Inspector, a Sergeant and a Constable have been interdicted over an alleged assault of a 16-year-old autistic teenager at Aluthgama.

A special investigation has been launched on the directive of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on the alleged assault of an autistic teenager, Ahmed Thariq in Aluthgama.

The incident of police manhandling the young boy who is a special needs child, went viral in social websites since May 25, the day of the incident,

Reacting to circulating news on social websites, the Police in a statement said its officers had attempted to investigate the boy who had stepped out on a bicycle without a face mask at a time when the island-wide Police curfew was in effect.

The Police issuing a press release today said the officers had not used excessive force or assaulted the child, but had only attempted to control him.

Following much outrage and calls for justice for the boy on social media, an investigation was launched by the Deputy IGP for the Kalutara District on the conduct of the Police officers involved in the incident.
