FIFA World Cup 2022: South Korea stuns Portugal 2-1, advances to the last 16 spot

DOHA : South Korea vs Portugal: South Korea wins 2-1 amidst a dramatic clash at the Education City Stadium.  Hee-Chan emerged as the champion for the Asian side as he scored a late goal in extra time to help the Asian side register a memorable win. Portugal, who made six changes to their side from the last game found the net inside six minutes but was not able to convert their chances later on. However, they had already advanced after two games and won the group.

“South Korea and Portugal were level at 1-1 by halftime in their World Cup Group H clash on Friday, with Kim Young-gwon giving the Taeguk Warriors a lifeline in game they must win to stand a chance of reaching the knockout round. Portugal, already qualified for the last 16 and needing only a draw to be sure of top spot in the group, had grabbed the lead with a fifth minute goal from Ricardo Horta, who met a Diogo Dalot cross and hammered it home from close range. Korea equalised off a corner with Kim pouncing on a bouncing ball in the goalmouth and hooking it into the net.” -Times of India

Young-Gwon swept home from a corner, following a shielding error from Ronaldo, to level at 1-1. Paulo Bento’s side then huffed and puffed and it looked as though they’d be heading home bottom of Group H, until Son Heung-Min led a incisive counter-attack, helping them progress.

The World Cup group stage comes to a conclusion today. While the already-qualified team of Portugal was hoping to make it three wins from three in Group H when they face South Korea, only to be defeated by South Korea in a pulsating match.
