SUMATRA: The earthquake that hit Southern Sumatra sea Wednesday morning but it has no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka, specifically the coastal areas of Sri Lanka are declared safe, the Meteorology Department said.
The earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 on the richter scale had occurred at the Southern Sumatra around 3:59am. (Sri Lankan time) Wednesday.
Frightened residents fled their homes when the twin offshore quakes rocked Bengkulu city on Sumatra’s western coast, an AFP reporter said.
“The first earthquake was quick…but another one hit shortly after and it was just as strong,” Bengkulu resident Jumentrio, who goes by one name, told AFP.
