NEW DELHI : In a solemn ceremony, which marks a milestone in the history of modern-day democracy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the new Parliament Building in New Delhi recently.
A multi-faith prayer by all major religions in the world including Buddhism was held on the historic occasion. It is expected that the proposed four-storeyed, modern Parliament building will be dedicated to the people of India in 2022 when the country celebrates her 75th year of independence. The new building is an endeavour to build a peoples’ Parliament in independent India that is reflective of both the democratic aspirations of the citizens of India in the 21st century and a self-reliant (Aatmanirbhar Bharat) nation.
The current Parliament building, an iconic structure that shaped the course of history of independent India, is close to 100 years old. It is in the current building that the world’s largest written constitution took shape through free debates and adopted on 26 November 2020. The new structure shall symbolize the confluence of India’s age-old democratic traditions and values and its contemporary place in the comity of nations.
Conveying a message of togetherness and unity during globally difficult times, Prime Minister Modi called on the people of India to build the new Parliament ‘together’. This initiative is keeping in line with the current Government’s multi-pronged efforts to implement progressive reforms in diverse fields and aligned with the vision of realizing a ‘New India’.
