Decision to ban on cattle slaughter put off by a month

COLOMBO : The final decision on banning ‘cattle slaughter’ is yet to be taken, Cabinet Spokesperson Mass Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said.

Responding to a query by a journalist at the media conference held yesterday at the Government Information Department to inform the decisions taken at this week’s Cabinet Meeting, Minister Rambukwella said that the government’s  decision on ‘cattle slaughter’ has been postponed by a month. On Tuesday (8), the Parliamentary Group of the ruling party approved a preliminary proposal made by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to ban cattle slaughter in Sri Lanka and discussions will be held with respective groups prior to reaching a decision.

However, sources said  the government will allow the import of beef to the island and the delay may be to ensure adequate stocks before the ban is implemented,
