COLOMBO : The date of the general elections will be notified within the next two weeks depending on the health conditions of the country, Government spokesman and Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage told newsmen on Saturday.
The minister was speaking to newsmen following the party representatives meeting held on Saturday morning with the members of the Election Commission.
A meeting between the Election Commission and the representatives of political parties that have submitted nominations for the General Election was held at the Elections Secretariat today (02).
This was the second time the Election Commission and political party representatives met after it was declared that the General Election would be postponed for June 20 due to the outbreak of COVID-19 virus.
Aluthgamage said pros and cons for holding the elections were discussed but the election commission did not arrive at a final decision at the meeting.
General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Dayasiri Jayasekera said his party members will attend the Premier’s meeting on Monday. “ It is useful to attend the meeting so that participants can exchange ideas with the prime minister,” Jayasekera said.
He said that the UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe is expected to attend the premier’s meeting with his party members who were former MPs.
Samagi Jana Balawegaya Secretary General Ranjith Maduma Bandara said there is no point in going for the premier’s meeting since it cannot take any useful decisions for the benefit of the country. Earlier, he said, the premier had two meetings and even the letter sent to the President by the Opposition Leader was responded with a nasty reply.
General Secretary of the UNP Akila Viraj Kariywasam said that his party members will attend the premier’s meeting lest there should be no room left to say that the party has not taken part in the meeting. “ We want to have the elections in a constitutional way which is expounded by the judiciary,” Kariyawasam said.
JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayaka said that it is futile to attend the premier’s meeting since 225 members started speaking at the meeting at least for three minutes each, the results will be unimaginable. He said the meeting will be a drama staged for the media only.
