COVID-19: Infected police officers tally reaches at 785

COLOMBO : A total of 785 police officers throughout the island are reported to have contracted the coronavirus so far, says Police Media Spokesperson.

Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana mentioned this joining the TV Derana breakfast show ‘Derana Aruna’ this morning (17).

Meanwhile, an officer attached to the Traffic Division of the Peradeniya Police has also tested positive for COVID-19.

Stating that the relevant police officer had been on duty the past several weeks, DIG Rohana said that investigations are carried out to determine how he caught the virus.

“As he was on traffic duty, we are investigating whether he was infected through something he used on the road or while on duty. We believe he may have contracted the virus as a result of his frequent traffic duties.”

However, a second PCR test is set to be carried out on the officer on the recommendation of the health authorities to further confirm his infection, he added.

“We can come to a conclusion [as to how he contracted the virus] after the results of the second PCR test. However, there is no definite revelation on how he contracted the virus.”

Meanwhile, the infected officer and his contacts are currently undergoing quarantine, the DIG said.
