OLUVIL : Dr. Faiz Mustapha, PC, Chancellor of the South Eastern University, paid a courtesy visit to the university for the first time after his appointment by the President of Sri Lanka.
During his visit, a reception ceremony was organized by Prof.A.Rameez, Vice Chancellor of the University recently at the Office of Vice Chancellor for Dr. Faiz Mustapha, the Chancellor of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka, Oluvil. Deans, Registrar, Librarian, and Bursar of the University participated in the event.
During this event, the Chancellor expressed his view that the University must develop and portray as a national university that can greatly contribute to society and the nation. The Chancellor also clarified staff quarters and other facilities provided to the diverse academic staff, who are representing outside districts and other communities.
The Chancellor highlighted the importance of English language education and Information Communication Technology (ICT) or Computer Science for students to meet the demand of the job market.
The VC and the other participants expressed their views to the Chancellor on the above matters, saying that they would work round the clock to meet the suggestions made by him.
When he inquired about the present status of the establishment of Faculty of Medicine, the Vice Chancellor explained the completion of the proposal for the establishment of the Medical Faculty that will be submitted for the approval of the UGC soon. However, the VC indicated that it is necessary to find international financial assistance or support to establish this faculty. The Chancellor expressed his view that he will extend his fullest support and cooperation to the VC and his administration for all the development activities that are progressing at the moment.
Then, the Chancellor took an internal tour of the library and saw infrastructure facilities.
Finally, the Chancellor met with the students’ representatives and actively listened to their grievances. The students also welcomed the Chancellor and requested their urgent need for rugby coaching and gym facilities. Chancellor promised to look into their needs Immediately and thereafter he made arrangements to address the needs of rugby with the support of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SRFU). He has also made a request to the Vice Chancellor to purchase equipments for gym on a priority basis.
