Budget Debate: Harsha calls for local, general elections same day

COLOMBO: Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Dr. Harsha de Silva on Tuesday, Nov. 15 called for the government to conduct the Local Government and the General Election at the same time in March 2023. Dr. de Silva made this observation,  opening the Second Reading debate on the budget. Dr.de Silva also proposed Sri Lanka should follow the US election system where the elections for the congress and the senate are conducted on the same day.

De Silva noted, “Elections Commission Chairman told us that funds have been allocated for the Local Government elections. So we can hold the General Election on the same day without spending extra money. So we propose to follow the US voting system where the elections for the Senate and the Congress take place on the same day.” De Silva observed that President Ranil Wickremesinghe has the opportunity to dissolve Parliament in March next year and call for an election to create a new Parliament. Dr.De Silva requested the President who was present at the Chamber to give people’s right to vote and elect a new government.

“Youth supporting the Aragalaya wanted to chase away the thieves who stole the national resources and their future. The President said that we need to follow Lee Kuan Yew, but you need to remember that he eradicated corruption. He didn’t say eradicating corruption is a myth. The whole world is talking about the economic crimes that happened in Sri Lanka. We cannot get out of this economic crisis without fighting corruption.” Dr.De Silva pointed out.(CDN)
