Bangladesh expects repayment from Sri Lanka of $200mn currency swap by September this year

DHAKA: On his return to Dhaka after a three-day visit to attend Sri Lanka’s 75th independence celebrations, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen said that Bangladesh envisaged Sri Lanka to commence repayment of the $ 200mn currency swap provided to the island-nation in 2021 by September of this year.

In January 2023, Sri Lanka sought a six-month extension to settle the loan as a result of the prolonged economic crisis the country continues to face.

At his meeting with Sri Lanka’s President, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Dr. Momen had explored the possibility of relying on Sri Lanka’s positive relationship with Myanmar to expedite Rohingya repatriation.
