Ajra Azhar takes over as News Editor-Legal at Colombo Times

COLOMBO- Ajra Azhar has taken over duties as News Editor- Legal of Colombo Times with immediate effect. She has been assigned several areas of her interest besides her cherished legal field.  

Ajra Azhar is a lawyer by profession, legal researcher, law lecturer and a consultant. She is a mooter, debater and an orator. She topped the batch at her first degree (LL.B Hons), completed Master of Human Rights and Democratization at University of Colombo and reading LL.M at the University of Colombo. She is the founder director of Hypo3sis (Guarantee) Ltd an organization providing impartial and interdisciplinary research, advocacy and consultancy services on legal, sociological, economic, political and development related issues. Provide legal and psychological consultancy services to build a sustainable and inclusive nation. Offer legal support to startups, new ventures, initialization of companies, businesses, corporations, organizations and enterprises. Additionally, Hypo3sis carry out project management tasks and activities such as proposal writing, field research, data coding, data analysis, monitoring and evaluation and report writing.

Moreover, she is the co-founder and director of Beyond (Guarantee) Ltd. Beyond consisting the women lawyers and entrepreneurs strive to empower women beyond the bar. Women for women is their motto. Empowering victimized vulnerable women, strengthening professional women and engaging in multi-level phases of women empowerment through legal assistance, career guidance, vocational training and women’s entrepreneurial works are the key focus areas.

Ajra is an Assistant Project Coordinator at Centre for the Study of Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Colombo. She has served as junior researcher for NLEAP (National Languages Equality Advancement) project, enhancing language rights, gender equality and women empowerment. She was the convener of National Advocacy Building Programme implemented by the Moot Court Bench in collaboration with the University of Jaffna. She has served as a research assistant at the Ministry of Justice for criminal law reform programme. She was the former assistant lecturer in law at the Department of Law, University of Jaffna. She was the panelist and represented Sri Lanka at the Women’s Day Celebration in 2021 organized by the Geneva Centre for Human Rights Advancement and Global Dialogue.

She has 8 publications published in peer reviewed journals and chaired 2 committees on research activities. Further she served as a consultant and facilitator for many legal and career guidance programmes at various levels. Community development and creating an inclusive society without leaving no one behind is a passion irresistible after her heart!
