220 more apparel workers test positive bringing the total to 321 from the cluster

COLOMBO: Another 220 apparel workers attached to the Minuwangoda Factory in the Gampaha District have tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday (06) following PCR tests carried out on Monday (05).

This was confirmed by Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Head of National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO), Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army.

The development came shortly after a 39-year-old woman, employed at a leading apparel factory in Minuwangoda, tested positive for coronavirus on Sunday (04) and was transferred from the Gampaha Hospital to the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) in Angoda.

A group of 111 COVID-19 patients were recorded on Monday (05), announced the Government Information Department.

This figure includes 101 patients from the Minuwangoda Apparel Factory cluster.

69 cases were reported from the apparel factory on Monday (05) morning.04 others are apparel workers who were on leave – (02 in Katupotha, Kurunegala, 01 in Medagama, Moneragala & 01 in Welanei in Jaffna.)

Further 28 other workers from the factory also tested positive for COVID-19. (18 from Minuwangoda, 02 from Katana, 01 from Seeduwa, 02 from Divulapitiya, 03 from Meerigama, 01 each from Ja-Ela & Mahara.)

In addition to the Minuwangoda apparel factory cluster, 10 others tested positive for coronavirus.

They are 03 returnees from the UAE, 03 seafarers from the UAE, 01 seafarer from the Red Sea region, and 03 returnees from Qatar.

These figures are according to the Department of Government Information.
